The latest project by Global Wheat, led by Wei Guo (University of Tokyo) and Andreas Hund (ETH Zurich, SPPN), has created a wheat head segmentation dataset (GWHS) for labelling the fully visible spike, all spikelets and biotic and abiotic stress-related damage. The aim is to enable the complete spike to be detected, the spikelets to be counted and their size determined, and the damage to spikelets to be quantified.

 

GWHS is coordinating the training in spikelet and Fusarium detection in images, which has been accepted as one of 13 projects at the BioHackathon Germany 2026, taking place from 7–11 December 2026.
