The SIB focusses on data aspects, including resources, services, and training. Two areas of focus at the institute are environmental protection and food security.
The SIB resources, which are supported by the group led by Séverine Duvaud, include the UniProt which contains plant protein sequences and functional information. The UniProt team has dedicated annotators working on plant proteins and extensive know-how on creating and using ontologies to capture information in a human- and machine-readable manner. Several other SIB data resources also provide plant data. For instance, the STRING database of protein-protein interactions, the orthology resources OMA and OrthoDB, and Cellosaurus which repertories plant cell lines. Finally, SWISS-MODEL can be used to model plant protein 3D structure.
The Vital-IT group, led by Mark Ibberson, provides bioinformatics expertise to national and international projects and initiatives in collaboration with academic and industry partners. Thanks to combined expertise in computational biology, data management and software engineering, the team develops custom-made solutions to answer complex biological questions.
The SIB Training group, led by Patricia Palagi, coordinates the institute’s bioinformatics training and course offer. Throughout its activities, it ensures that the next generation of bioinformaticians and life scientists make the best of the latest advances in computational biology. Among others, it provides courses on data analysis and machine learning.
